TITLE: New Help Features in Agenda 2.0 DATE: 08-Jun-1990

PROBLEM:

How is the Agenda 2.0 Help system different from Agenda 1.0 and 1.01 Help?

SOLUTION:

Agenda 2.0 has context-sensitive help, which means that Help anticipates the need for information based on where the customer is in the program. In addition, a new "Find" feature allows the customer to enter a word or phrase that describes the information being searched for, and Agenda automatically searches the entire Help system to find that information.

TITLE: General Information on Agenda 2.0 DATE: 08-Jun-1990

PROBLEM:

What new features does Agenda 2.0 contain?

SOLUTION:

The following is a brief description of some of the new features in Agenda 2.0.

Starter Applications

Agenda 2.0 features four Starter Applications to help new users become productive quickly. The Starter Applications -- Activities Planner, Account Manager, People Manager and Information Sifter -- were developed based on customer feedback.

Date and Time Features for Flexibility and Ease of Use

Agenda 2.0's date and time features allow a user to enter information such as: "Meeting with Tom next Tuesday at 10 AM" and the application will correctly identify and log the exact month, day and time of "next Tuesday at 10:00 AM".

A new "Datebook" view allows users to scan their schedule in a format similar to paper formats. For example, date and time information can be viewed on a daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly basis. Agenda 2.0 also features a pop-up calendar that enables users to plan an accurate schedule with a minimum of time and effort.

Wider Views and Basic Column Math

Users will have greater access to information through new wider views. Basic column math equips managers to perform expense tracking and project budgets. Agenda 2.0 also features new pop-up setting boxes that make it easy to customize.

New Printing Features

Agenda 2.0 supports drivers for 90 printers and supports Postscript, multiple fonts, print preview, hyphenation, landscape mode, and double-sided printing. Agenda 2.0 also supports a variety of paper sizes, including familiar calendar book sizes.

Application Tools for Corporate Developers and Macro Enhancements

Agenda 2.0 provides an excellent environment for developing corporate-wide applications. The new release includes a greatly enhanced macro facility including support for customized menus, definable keys, screen control, and error handling. Agenda 2.0 also allows a developer to protect views, categories, and macros to prevent users from inadvertently altering applications.

TITLE: Starter Applications in Agenda 2.0 DATE: 08-Jun-1990

PROBLEM:

What are the Starter Applications included in Agenda 2.0?

SOLUTION:

Agenda 2.0 features four Starter Applications to help new users become productive quickly. A brief description of the four applications follows.

Activities Planner

The Activities Planner is a personal management tool for tracking day-to-day business activities, planning schedules, making contact lists and noting ideas. The Planner can be used for scheduling, listing phone calls to make, meetings to attend, priorities and daily expenses.**

Account Manager

The Account Manager is a sales/support tool for tracking clients and accounts, and reporting on issues and progress. Sales and support organizations need to have up-to-date information about each client. Account Manager helps to maintain client and prospect information, as well as calls, meetings, and expenses. With Account Manager, the information can then be shared with peers, or used to create a status report.

People Manager

The People Manager is a resource-management tool for setting goals and tracking the progress of people in a group or organization. For managers responsible for hiring and managing a work group, People Manager helps to establish and maintain records for people.

Information Sifter

The Information Sifter is an information management tool for analyzing information imported into Agenda from external sources. Information Sifter demonstrates how to use Agenda to organize large amounts of external data and tailor it for a specific project or need.

TITLE: Monthly Recurring Dates in Agenda 2.0 DATE: 31-Aug-1990

PROBLEM:

Entering an item that contains a monthly recurring When date in Agenda 2.0 produces unpredictable results. For example, if the current date is 8/27/90, and the item text:

the 30th of every month

is entered, Agenda assigns a When date of 9/30/90. When the item is marked Done repeatedly, Agenda 2.0 generates the following incorrect dates:

     1/30/91
     3/2/91
     4/30/91
     6/30/91
     8/30/91
     9/30/91
     11/30/91

However, if a date earlier than the current system date is specified as a recurring date, the problem does not occur. Using the above example, any items referencing "the 1st of every month" through "the 26th of every month" will be redated correctly.

SOLUTION:

Order the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit from Lotus Customer Service at 1-800-345-1043. There is no charge for the Update Kit.

TITLE: Quarterly Recurring Dates in Agenda 2.0 DATE: 31-Aug-1990

PROBLEM:

Entering an item that contains a quarterly recurring When date in Agenda 2.0 produces unpredictable results. For example, if the current date is 8/27/90, and the item text:

every quarter

is entered, Agenda assigns a When date of 7/1/90. If the item is marked Done, Agenda generates a new item with a When date of 1/1/91. It seems that semiannual dates are being generated, not quarterly dates.

SOLUTION:

Order the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit from Lotus Customer Service at 1-800-345-1043. There is no charge for the Update Kit.

TITLE: Setting the AG_ENV Variable When Using a RAM Disk DATE: 31-Aug-1990

PROBLEM:

What is the proper setting for the AG_ENV environment variable when Agenda 2.0 is run from a RAM disk? What affect will an incorrect setting have on an Agenda session?

SOLUTION:

Agenda 2.0 stores its configuration settings (file properties, print layout, etc.) in the Agenda environment file AGENDA.ENV. This file is updated during each Agenda session. By default, Agenda stores this file with the A.EXE and AGENDA.RI files; if these files are run from a RAM drive, AGENDA.ENV will also be stored on the RAM drive. However, the contents of the RAM drive are lost whenever the machine is reset, so the new AGENDA.ENV file will not be saved in the Agenda program directory.

To force Agenda to save the AGENDA.ENV in the program directory, place the command

SET AG_ENV=C:\AGENDA

in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file (C:\AGENDA should be the path to the program files). This SET statement will allow Agenda to find the proper environment file when the program loads, and save it in the right place at the end of the session.

TITLE: #Time Includes Day of the Week DATE: 31-Aug-1990

PROBLEM:

If "Show day of the week" is set to Yes, under [F10] File Properties / Global Date Settings / Display Format, the special macro variables #date and #time will include the day of the week. Thus a simple date stamp macro that TYPEs both variables will include the day of the week twice.

SOLUTION:

Order the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit from Lotus Customer Service at 1-800-345-1043. There is no charge for the Update Kit.

TITLE: Linking Identical Columns
DATE: 31-Aug-1990

PROBLEM:

When trying to link two identical columns in a view, as described on page 5-24 of the Agenda 2.0 User's Guide, setting "Link with other sections" to Yes for one of the sections does not seem to link the current section to other sections in the view.

SOLUTION:

Each unlinked column head must be set to Link. Setting one unlinked column head to Link does not automatically link other identical unlinked columns in other sections. To link the identical category columns, select [F10] View Column Properties and specify Yes for the "Link with other sections" setting.

(C) 1990 Lotus Development Corporation. All rights reserved.

TITLE: Unlinking Linked Columns
DATE: 31-Aug-1990

PROBLEM:

When attempting to unlink a linked column and specify a new category type (standard to date, date to unindexed, etc.), the column heading does not seem to unlink, and all headings in the sections change to the new category type.

SOLUTION:

Changing column type and unlinking simultaneously does not work properly. Unlink the column first, and then change the heading for the unlinked column. Follow these steps to unlink columns and change category types.

Select: [F6] Properties.
Move to the Link with other sections setting. Specify No and press RETURN.
Select: [F6] Properties.
Move to the Category type setting.
Specify the new category type (date, unindexed, etc.) and press RETURN.

The problem has been reported to Lotus Development Quality Assurance and is currently under investigation.

TITLE: Agenda 2.0 Documentation Error: Minimum Memory Required DATE: 31-Aug-1990

PROBLEM:

In Appendix E of the Agenda 2.0 User's Guide, on page E-2, a note regarding minimum memory requirements states:

"If you have a monitor that displays 43 or 50 lines at a time, you can subtract 5K from the above minimum requirements."

SOLUTION:

This is incorrect; 5K should be ADDED to the stated minimums. The following table lists the minimum memory required to load Agenda 2.0 with different memory/monitor configurations.

No expanded, 25 lines: 435K
Expanded, 25 lines: 395K
No expanded, 43 or 50 lines: 440K

TITLE: Running Agenda 2.0 in the Windows 3.0 Environment DATE: 14-Sep-1990

PROBLEM:

Will Agenda 2.0 run in the Windows 3.0 environment?

SOLUTION:

Agenda 2.0 was tested in the Windows 3.0 environment using the guidelines listed below.

Agenda 2.0 runs as a "non-Windows application" under Windows 3.0. It will run in any of the three modes of Windows 3.0 (Real, Standard, or 386 Enhanced). It is recommended that Agenda be run in 386 Enhanced Mode on a 386 machine; this will allow Agenda to access EMS memory, which will enhance its performance.

Windows creates PIF files for non-Windows applications which can be edited with the PIF Editor. The PIF files establish settings for running the application under Windows. There are two groups of PIF file settings; one for 386 Enhanced Mode, and one for Real or Standard modes.

For Real or Standard mode, the Windows PIF file default settings should be used.

For 386 Enhanced Mode, there are two settings on the Advanced page that should be modified. For the Display Options - Video Memory setting, the default setting is High Graphics. Selecting Text instead will minimize the memory requirement.

In the Priority settings section, the Foreground Priority number should be increased from its default of 100 to a higher number, such as 5,000. This increases Agenda's performance when other applications are present. This allows a small amount of time for other applications to execute in the background, but reserves the majority of cycles for Agenda while it is the foreground application.

The Foreground Priority setting does not affect Agenda's performance when Agenda is the only application running.

TITLE: Error: "Invalid Graphics Display Driver" DATE: 14-Sep-1990

PROBLEM:

When / Print Preview is selected in Agenda 2.0, the error message "Invalid Graphics Display Driver" is displayed. The computer contains a VGA card, which Agenda 2.0 correctly detected during the Install program.

SOLUTION:

The error message was caused by a memory resident program called Vidram which is shipped with QEMM. When the line:

VIDRAM ON

was removed from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and the computer was rebooted, the error message did not occur.

TITLE: Computer Hangs when Printing or Exiting from Agenda 2.0 DATE: 14-Sep-1990

PROBLEM:

When an attempt was made to print or exit from Agenda 2.0, the computer locked up.

SOLUTION:

The DOS command:

APPEND/X

was present in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The APPEND/X command sets a search path for data files and executable files (e.g. EXE, COM, BAT). The APPEND/X command is used as an alternative to the PATH command. When the APPEND/X statement was removed from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, the problem was resolved.

TITLE: Cannot Edit Monthly Recurring Dates DATE: 21-Sep-1990

PROBLEM:

An item with the text "15th of every month" is entered in a view on 8/30/90. Agenda correctly assigns the item a When Date of 9/15/90. If the When Date is edited, however, an incorrect date of 9/1/90 appears in the When Date column. Follow these steps to recreate the problem:

  1. Enter the following item in a view: The 15th of every month.
  2. Press: ALT-[F2] WHEN while highlighting the item. Or, move to the When Date column, highlight 9/15/90 and press [F2] EDIT. In the control panel the text reads "beginning of the month (9/15/90)".
  3. Press: RETURN. The date now reads 9/1/90. This is incorrect.

TITLE: View Manager Will Display Only 100 Views DATE: 28-Sep-1990

PROBLEM:

In Agenda 1.0 and 1.01 the number of views that could be displayed in the View Manager was affected only by the size of the combined AGA and AGB files. In Agenda 2.0 only 100 views are displayed in the View Manager.

SOLUTION:

In Agenda 2.0 the number of views that can be displayed in the View Manager is limited to 100. In a view, ALT-N NEXT can be used to go to the next view in a series; however, only the first 100 views in the database will be displayed in the View Manager.

TITLE: Items Can Have Only One Value in an Unindexed Category DATE: 05-Oct-1990

PROBLEM:

In Agenda 1.0 / 1.01, an item could be associated with many entries in an unindexed category. For example, if the unindexed category "Phone" existed in a database, an item could have many phone numbers associated with it. However, when the database is imported into Agenda 2.0, only the first phone number is retained.

SOLUTION:

Items assigned to Agenda 2.0 unindexed categories can have only one value in that unindexed category. This feature is documented on page 3-10 of the User's Guide. As a workaround, use a standard category instead of an unindexed category; or use a category note to store the multiple entries.

8. Press: [F6] PROPERTIES.
9. Move to the ASSIGNED TO section of the Properties box. 10. Highlight the category JOE.
11. Press: DELETE to break the item assignment and press RETURN.

TITLE: Items Entered in Views Filtered for Exclusive Siblings DATE: 19-Oct-1990

PROBLEM:

An Agenda 2.0 view has been filtered to contain items assigned to two categories which are exclusive siblings. In Agenda 1.0 / 1.01, items would be assigned to the second of the two categories, overriding an assignment to the first. In Agenda 2.0, however, items are sometimes assigned to the first category, and sometimes to the second. Why does this occur?

SOLUTION:

When an item is entered into a view filtered for two exclusive categories, Agenda 2.0 will try to resolve the conflict by checking the assignment of the previous item in the view. If there is a previous item, Agenda 2.0 will assign the current item in accordance with the previous item's assignment. If there is no previous item, Agenda 2.0 will assign the item to the first of the exclusive categories.

To observe this feature, follow these steps:

  1. Select: [F10] File Retrieve and open a new database.
  2. Press: [F9] CAT MGR to go to the category manager.
  3. Press: INSERT and create the category TYPE.
  4. Press: ALR-R to create the category FIRST as a child of TYPE.
  5. Press: INSERT to create the category SECOND as a child category of TYPE.
  6. Move to the TYPE category and press [F6] PROPERTIES.
  7. Move to the Exclusive Children setting and specify Yes and press RETURN.

The category structure for the example is complete. Press [F9] TO VIEW to return to the view. In the view:

9. Press: ALT-R and add TYPE as a category column in the view. 10. Select: [F10] View Properties and filter the view to include items

assigned to FIRST and SECOND.
11. Enter the item "This is number one." Agenda automatically assigns

this item to "FIRST".
12. Enter the item "This is number two.", and use ALT-M Item MakeAssign to

manually assign this item to the category "SECOND". 13. If the item "This is number one." is highlighted and INSERT is

pressed, the new item is assigned to "FIRST", but if the item "This is number two." is highlighted, and INSERT is pressed, the new item is assigned to "SECOND".

When an Agenda 1.0 / 1.01 database is retrieved and updated in Agenda 2.0, the items are assigned only to Entry Date; all of the other item assignments are lost. In Agenda 1.0 / 1.01, the child categories of MAIN were exclusive.

SOLUTION:

This occurs because in Agenda 2.0, Entry, When and Done dates are now full child categories of MAIN. If the child categories of MAIN are exclusive, assigning the item to anything other than Entry date conflicts with the assignment to Entry date itself. Agenda resolves these conflicting assignments by leaving items assigned to Entry date and nothing else.

To restore the item assignments to the database, follow these steps:

  1. File Open the database in Agenda 1.0 / 1.01.
  2. Press: [F9] CAT MGR to go to the Category Manager.
  3. Select: [F10] Exclusive to make the child categories of MAIN not exclusive.
  4. Retrieve the file in Agenda 2.0.

This problem has been reported to Lotus Quality Assurance, and is currently under investigation. There is no other solution at this time.

TITLE: Machine Hangs When Print Preview is Selected DATE: 19-Oct-1990

PROBLEM:

If / Print Preview is selected in Agenda 2.0, the computer hangs and must be rebooted. The correct Video Display choice has been selected in the Install program. The computer is an IBM XT 8-Bit system with 640K RAM and a CGA monitor.

SOLUTION:

A Tallgrass board had been installed in the XT which allowed the machine to operate as though it were a 16-Bit 286. The CONFIG.SYS file contained the following statement for the Tallgrass board:

DEVICE=C:\SHORTCUT.SYS

When the device statement was removed from the CONFIG.SYS file, the / Print Preview command worked correctly.

TITLE: Machine Reboots with Boca Ram Board Installed DATE: 26-Oct-1990

PROBLEM:

A 512K Boca Ram board was installed in a NEC Powermate Plus, so that expanded memory would be available for Agenda 2.0. The board was installed correctly, and diagnostics indicated that the expanded memory was being recognized. However, when the command Agenda was entered to load the program, the machine rebooted.

SOLUTION:

Order the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit from Lotus Customer Service at 1-800-345-1043. There is no charge for the Update Kit.

NOTE: The Boca Ram expanded memory board and the NEC Powermate Plus have not been tested by Lotus and certified as compatible for use with Agenda 2.0.

TITLE: Performance Tips for Agenda 2.0 DATE: 02-Nov-1990

PROBLEM:

What steps can be taken to improve the performance of Agenda 2.0?

SOLUTION:

I. MEMORY CONSIDERATIONS

Using expanded memory (EMS) will provide the most dramatic performance improvement in Agenda 2.0. If expanded memory is not available, configuring memory above 640K for a disk cache or a RAM disk will also increase performance. To summarize, the order of preference for memory configuration when using Agenda 2.0 is:

  1. Expanded memory
  2. Disk cache
  3. RAM disk

NOTE: Agenda 2.0 does not recognize extended memory.

To improve performance on a machine that has only 640K of RAM, free up as much memory for Agenda as possible. For example, remove RAM-resident programs (TSRs), network drivers, terminal emulators, etc.

II. FILE CONSIDERATIONS

In addition to memory configuration options, there are also performance guidelines for individual database files. These include:

  1. Avoid creating very long views. Although Agenda 2.0 recalculates portions of the view that are off-screen in the background, the recalculation may interfere with processing keystrokes.
Create smaller views that contain only 2 or 3 sections currently
being worked on. To work with another section, insert that section
into the view, and to keep the view small, remove one of the other
current sections. Adding sections in this manner is much more
efficient than building a very large view. If the view contains at
least one section, the column arrangement will stay intact.

2. Filtering and sorting views are time-consuming operations. Use these

guidelines when filtering or sorting:

  1. Create the filter using the smallest possible number of categories. If a complex filter is necessary, create a category with a complex condition, then filter on only that category.
  2. In sort settings, specify "On leaving a section" or "On demand".
  3. Avoid using filters and/or sorting on very long views.
  4. Avoid sections that are headed by categories with many descendants.

For example, a database contains the category Parent which has numerous child categories, and it is necessary to use Parent as a section in the view.

As a workaround, create a new, childless category, (i.e., Parent2), and use a condition on the new category to pull all items assigned to Parent to the new category (Parent2). The new category (Parent2) can then be used as a section head. The condition will be reevaluated as items are entered or edited, but the performance will not be affected every time the display is scrolled or rebuilt.

Never use MAIN as a section head in a view, since all of the categories in the database are descendants of MAIN. To see all the items in the database, select [F10] Utility Show Every.

4. Turn conditions (or text matching) off for portions of the category

hierarchy that don't need them. To disable conditions for a category, in the Category Manager:

  1. Move to the category.
  2. Select: [F10] Category Properties.
  3. Move to Advanced Settings and press the SPACE BAR.
  4. Move to Apply Conditions and press [F3] CHOICES.
  5. Specify either On demand or Never.
  6. Press RETURN 3 times to accept the settings.

This setting will apply to all descendant categories of the category. To disable conditions on other parent categories, repeat the above steps.

TITLE: Pause Command for Interactive Macros DATE: 02-Nov-1990

PROBLEM:

In an interactive macro in Agenda 2.0, what command can be used to suspend macro execution so that data can be entered? For example, what is the macro equivalent in Agenda 2.0 of the pause command {?} in 123?

SOLUTION:

Agenda has no direct equivalent to the pause command {?} in 123. However, the {GETKEY} command can be used to create a macro pause in Agenda 2.0. The following macro contains an example of the {GETKEY} command.

{comment; Equivalent to 123's PAUSE}

{label;loop}
{comment; Stores next key pressed in variable %a}

{getkey; %a}
{comment; Tests to see if key pressed is RETURN, if it is, ends loop}

{if;(%a={ENTER});doneloop}

TITLE: Problems with Print Options After Launching from Magellan DATE: 02-Nov-1990

PROBLEM:

When a customer attempts to access the Agenda 2.0 Print menu or Quit from the program, a PRINT-SCRN is generated, or the machine hangs with a WAIT indicator in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Agenda 2.0 was launched from within Lotus Magellan.

SOLUTION:

The problem occurs only when Magellan's 94 column screen display option is used (MG94). The MG94.COM file uses an Ultravision display driver to increase the viewing area on the Magellan screen. The Ultravision driver conflicts with Agenda.

The problem has been reported to Lotus Development Quality Assurance and is currently under investigation. As a workaround, use the standard (80 x 25) screen display in Magellan.

TITLE: Performance Problems with Agenda 2.0 and EMS 4.0 Managers DATE: 02-Nov-1990

PROBLEM:

Customers have reported experiencing severe problems with Agenda 2.0's performance when it is used with certain Expanded Memory Managers (EMM's). Many of these problems are associated with the particular expanded memory manager being used and not with Agenda.

SOLUTION:

NOTE: This information refers to Agenda 2.0's use of expanded memory for program code (i.e., overlays) and not for data. There must be at least 368K of expanded memory available or the overlay manager will not use expanded memory.

When Agenda loads, the overlay manager will detect if there is expanded memory on the machine and also whether the memory is Expanded Memory Specification (EMS) 3.X or EMS 4.X. Agenda then configures the overlay manager to use what should be the most efficient access method (EMS 4.X if available).

However, some expanded memory managers have implemented extremely slow EMS 4.X functionality, since most programs use only the subset of functions also available in EMS 3.X. Since the performance increase is very small with efficient EMS 4.X managers and is terrible with inefficient EMS 4.X managers, the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit will default to the EMS 3.X method.

Both the First Customer Ship (FCS) version of Agenda 2.0 and the the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit have special switches that can be used to manipulate which EMS method the Agenda overlay manager uses. A brief description of each of the three switches follows:

/OVNONE - Available in both versions of Agenda, this switch turns off the use of expanded memory by the overlay manager. In general, performance should be adjusted with one of the other two switches; however, this option is available.

/OVEMS3 - Available in both versions (FCS and the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit) and now the default for the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit version. If expanded memory is available, this switch will force the overlay manager to use the EMS 3.X method. If expanded memory is not available, no error message will be displayed and Agenda will still execute.

/OVEMS4 - This switch is only available in the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit version of Agenda, but was the default method in the FCS shipment of Agenda 2.0. If an EMS 4.0 driver is installed in the computer, this switch causes the overlay manager to use the EMS 4.X method.

For example, to load Agenda and use the memory manager's EMS 3.X method, enter the following command at the DOS prompt in the Agenda directory:

AGENDA /OVEMS3

To determine which of the above switches is optimal for a particular expanded memory manager, test Agenda with both the /OVEMS3 and /OVEMS4 switches and evaluate the performance increase/decrease.

TITLE: Date Categories are Duplicated in a Structured File DATE: 09-Nov-1990

PROBLEM:

A customer has imported an STF (structured) file into Agenda 2.0. The database inexplicably contains duplicate date categories, both the standard set:

as well as a new, unindexed set:

Some items are assigned to the first date categories, some items are assigned to the second set, and some items are assigned to both sets of categories.. What causes this problem, and how can it be corrected?

SOLUTION:

The problem occurs due to the vast differences in date handling between the two versions of Agenda. The following table lists the way Agenda defines (or tags) dates in structured files in 1.0 / 1.01 and 2.0:

1.0 / 1.01 STF file: 2.0 STF file:

{E}10/31/90 {C}\Entry@|10%/31%/1990 11:12
{W}10/31/90 {C}\When@|10%/31%/1990
{D}10/31/90 {C}\Done@|10%/31%/1990 11:15

In the above situation, the customer was auto-importing a structured file originally created in Agenda 1.X into Agenda 2.0. When the database was updated in Agenda 2.0 the same structured file was used. When the structured file was exported and reimported in Agenda 2.0, the new data was added to the existing file.

When a 1.X structured file is imported into Agenda 2.0, Agenda encounters the 1.X STF format (date tag), and assigns items to the existing date categories in the database. However, when the file has been exported from Agenda 2.0 and reimported, Agenda encounters the 2.0 STF format (date tag), and creates new unindexed date categories. This is when the duplication occurs.

If the reverse happens, and Agenda encounters the 2.0 date flags first, items are assigned to the proper date categories. This would occur only under the following circumstances: the structured file was originally created in Agenda 2.0, then imported into and exported from 1.X. When the structured file is then imported into Agenda 2.0, Agenda reads the 2.0 date tags first, the second set of date categories are not created, and the items are assigned properly.

NOTE: When this problem occurs, the STF file must be abandoned; there is no way to correctly assign the items to the proper date categories.

A structured file originally created in Agenda 1.X should not be used to export Agenda 2.0 data. Create a new structured file for use with the Agenda 2.0 database.

TITLE: ALT-[F4] Discard and Unindexed Categories DATE: 09-Nov-1990

PROBLEM:

A customer has created an unindexed column containing a series of invoice numbers in an Agenda 2.0 database. When ALT-[F4] DISCARD is pressed, to discard one of the invoice numbers, Agenda displays the prompt "Category has assignments. Discard the category?". If RETURN is pressed to confirm the prompt, every entry in the unindexed column is deleted, and the unindexed category itself is removed from both the view and the category manager. It is possible to use ALT-[F4] DISCARD to discard an entry in an unindexed column in Agenda 1.0 /1.01.

SOLUTION:

When ALT-[F4] DISCARD is pressed to discard an entry in an unindexed category column, the actual category is being discarded. An unindexed category does not have child categories; it has a series of text values (e.g., invoice numbers) that assign items to the unindexed category. For more information on unindexed categories, refer to the Agenda 2.0 User's Guide (pages 3-23 - 3-25).

When a category is discarded, it is removed from the view and from the database; that is why the category is removed from the category manager.

Although it is not documented that the situation described above will occur, this is how the DISCARD function works. Note that discarded categories are not placed in the database trash; there is no way to recover discarded categories.

In the example above, the invoice number can be removed from the view by pressing DELETE. This will affect only the text value associated with the particular item, the unindexed category and its other text values will remain in the view.

TITLE: Detecting the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit DATE: 07-Dec-1990

PROBLEM:

When a customer calls with an Agenda 2.0 problem, how is it possible to determine whether they are using the original Agenda 2.0 program or the Update Kit?

SOLUTION:

The Agenda 2.0 Update Kit consists of two 5.25 inch disks, one 3.5 inch disk, a customer letter, and a coupon for the Agenda Legal Applications. Verify the sizes and dates of the following files to determine whether the customer is using the original Agenda 2.0 or the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit. The Agenda 2.0 Update Kit disks contain the following files:

5.25 inch disk 1 (Update Installation Disk 1)

   A1.E!E 286,720 10-15-90 2:00a
   INSTALL.EXE 32,715 10-15-90 2:00a

5.25 inch disk 2 (Update Installation Disk 2)

   A2.E!E 191,455 10-15-90 2:00a
   AGENDA.R!2 83,463 10-15-90 2:00a
   TXT3STF.E!E 44,973 10-15-90 2:00a

3.5 inch Disk directory

   A3.E!E 478,175 10-15-90 2:00a
   AGENDA.R!2 83,463 10-15-90 2:00a
   INSTALL.EXE 32,715 10-15-90 2:00a
   TXT3STF.E!E 44,973 10-15-90 2:00a

The Agenda 2.0 Update Kit replaces only three program files. After the Update Kit installation is completed, the sizes of the three inflated files are:

   A.EXE 676,756 10-15-90
   AGENDA.RI 169,858 10-15-90
   TXT3STF.EXE 62,293 10-15-90

The original Agenda 2.0 files are listed below for reference.

   AGENDA.RI VARIED SIZE AND DATE
   A.EXE 673,630 8-17-90 2:00a

TITLE: Error: "Can't Open AG.TMP"
DATE: 30-Nov-1990

PROBLEM:

When a customer attempts to load Agenda 2.0 the error message "Can't open AG.TMP file" is displayed. The drive that Agenda is installed on has over 7 Megs of available disk space. The AG_TMP variable has not been used to redefine where Agenda saves temporary files.

SOLUTION:

The customer had been experiencing problems with an Agenda 2.0 database which caused the computer to lock up. Each time the machine was rebooted, a temporary file (e.g., AGTMP01.TMP) was left in the Agenda directory. When the temporary files were deleted the program loaded without error.

NOTE: Agenda will create a maximum of 99 different temporary files (AGTMP01.TMP - AGTMP99.TMP). After the 99 file names are exhausted, the message "Can't open AG.TMP file" will be displayed.

TITLE: Machine Hangs When ALT-Q is Pressed to Quit From Agenda DATE: 07-Dec-1990

PROBLEM:

When a customer selects [F10] Quit or presses ALT-Q to Quit from Agenda 2.0 the machine hangs. Agenda was launched from Magellan 2.0; however, the machine hangs even when Agenda is started from the DOS prompt in the Agenda directory.

SOLUTION:

The AUTOEXEC.BAT file contained the DOS command:

APPEND /X

The DOS command APPEND /X enables a program to search a machine's drives and directories for EXE and COM files. When the APPEND /X command was removed from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and the machine was rebooted, the problem did not occur. It was possible to launch Agenda from Magellan 2.0, Quit from Agenda and return to Magellan.

NOTE: Modifying the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to include the APPEND /X command was recommended by Macola Incorporated in Marian, Ohio. Macola Accounting Software is a software package for accounting, distribution and manufacturing.

The APPEND /X command is not necessary to run the Macola software, and Macola no longer recommends that the AUTOEXEC.BAT file contain the command. For further information on Macola software call 1-800-468-0834.

5. Highlight "Do marketing research" and press [F7] MARK. 6. Move to "Prepare sales forecast" and press ALT-O. Agenda will display

the prompt: "Make the current item dependent on the marked items?" 7. Press RETURN to confirm the prompt. Agenda correctly hides the

dependent item, "Prepare sales forecast". 8. Mark the prerequisite item "Do marketing research" DONE [F4].

Agenda does not display the dependent item, "Prepare sales forecast" in the view; it should be displayed, since it has not been completed. If Hide Done Items is set to No, the problem does not occur. The problem does not occur in Agenda 1.0 / 1.01.

SOLUTION:

Order the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit from Lotus Customer Service at 1-800-345-1043. There is no charge for the Update Kit.

TITLE: Totals in Numeric Column Disappear from Datebook View DATE: 14-Dec-1990

PROBLEM:

A customer has installed the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit. A numeric category column has been added to a Datebook view. If any of the following menu options are selected, the Totals in the numeric category column disappear from the Datebook view:

  1. [F8] VIEW MANAGER, to select a different view, then return to the Datebook view.
  2. [F10] View Column Properties (or [F6] PROPERTIES) to modify the properties of the numeric category.
  3. [F10] View Properties to modify the view.

The problem did not occur before the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit was installed.

SOLUTION:

The problem has been reported to Lotus Development Quality Assurance and is currently under investigation. The problem occurs only in Datebook views; it will occur with any of the numeric column calculation settings (i.e., Count, Total, Average, Minimum, Maximum).

As a workaround, a macro can be used to recreate the column. Press ALT-A to copy a macro that will recreate the column .

However, the totals in the numeric column will disappear again when any of the menu options outlined above are used. To bring the totals back, create an additional numeric column with only TOTAL (the default). When the additional numeric column is created, Agenda inserts the totals back in the other columns.

This additional numeric column can be used as a "dummy" column. Whenever the totals disappear from the numeric category column, delete the dummy TOTAL column from the view and add it again. Agenda will then insert the totals back in the other numeric category columns.

TITLE: Relative Date Format is Displayed for only Seven Days DATE: 14-Dec-1990

PROBLEM:

A customer has specified a Relative date format in Agenda 2.0 ([F10] View Column Properties Date Format). However, only seven days are displayed in the relative date format. All other dates are displayed in the global format specified ([F10] File, Properties, Global Date Settings, Display Format). Agenda 1.0 / 1.01 displayed a broader range of relative dates.

The following list of items demonstrates the difference in the relative date ranges displayed by Agenda 1.X and 2.0. The items were entered in Agenda databases on Thursday 12/13/90.

TITLE: Recurring Date Items are not Evaluated Correctly DATE: 14-Dec-1990

PROBLEM:

An Agenda database contains items with recurring dates. When the items are marked [F4] DONE, Agenda does not generate a new item with the next occurrence of the date. [F10] Category, Properties, Advanced Settings, Can use recurring dates is set to Yes. New items entered with recurring dates are being evaluated correctly when marked [F4] DONE.

SOLUTION:

The items that were not evaluating correctly had been imported from a structured (STF) file. Agenda will not generate a new item for any recurring date item that is imported from an STF file. To force Agenda to generate a new item with the next occurrence of the date, the item must be recreated.

To recreate the item:

Press: [F2] EDIT.
Press: [F3] CHOICES twice and select All Text. Press: RETURN twice.

Move to the new location for the item:

Press: INS.
Press: [F2] PASTE and press RETURN.

The problem has been reported to Lotus Development Quality Assurance and is currently under investigation.

TITLE: End-of-File Marker is not Stripped from Exported Note DATE: 14-Dec-1990

PROBLEM:

A customer imported a text file into an Agenda 2.0 note. The original file contained the end-of-file (EOF) marker (ASCII character 26), symbolized by a right arrow. The Agenda note was then exported to a text file. Another note was exported to the same file name, and the Append option was specified, to append the second note to the first note file.

In Agenda, the customer can view both notes in the text file if [F10] File Attach is selected to attach an item to the file. However, other programs (for example 123), are only able to read the first note; the second appended note is not displayed. The size of the file indicates that both notes are in the file.

SOLUTION:

Agenda does not use the end-of-file marker to find the true end of the file. Agenda uses the physical end of the file, which is determined by DOS, to indicate the end of the file. Many programs, (for example 123), use the end-of-file marker to determine where the end of the file is located.

Agenda will not remove end-of-file markers before appending a note to the end of an existing file. To successfully append notes, delete the end-of-file marker before the note is exported.

TITLE: Certain File Properties Settings Can Damage File DATE: 31-Aug-1990

PROBLEM:

When an item is marked Done in Agenda 2.0 under the following circumstances the database will be damaged. The damage will occur only if:

1.) File Properties are set to discard Done items immediately, and 2.) The database trash is set to be emptied when items are discarded.

Follow these steps to recreate the problem:

Select: [F10] File Properties.
Move to the Empty Trash setting.
Press: [F3] Choices and specify When Item is Discarded. Move to the Global Date Setting and press SPACE. Move to the Process Done Items setting. Press: [F3] Choices and specify Discard. Accept Immediately for the When setting. Press: RETURN twice.

If an item is marked Done, the file will be damaged. The indicator will read DMGD!, And a Damaged File pop-up box will be displayed.

SOLUTION:

This problem has been addressed in the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit. Transfer the customer to Customer Service to order the kit. Customers can also call Lotus Customer Service directly at 1-800-345-1043 to order the kit. There will be no charge for the Update Kit.

TITLE: Error Installing Agenda 2.0 Update Kit DATE: 28-Dec-1990

PROBLEM:

Attempts to install the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit are unsuccessful. The following message is displayed:

You are updating an incorrect version of Agenda or
you have already installed the Agenda 2.0 Update.

Make sure you have installed Agenda 2.0 before you
           install the Update.

Agenda 2.0 is installed and has been running properly on the PC. However, the file A.EXE, which is normally 673,630 bytes, is 673,640 bytes.

SOLUTION:

The customer had used a virus protection program which added a 10 byte validation code to all executable files. The Agenda 2.0 Update Install program did not recognize the modified A.EXE as the correct Agenda 2.0 program file. When the virus protection program was used to remove the validation code, the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit was successfully installed.

TITLE: Error: "Disk is Bad, Contact Replacement" During Install DATE: 28-Dec-1990

PROBLEM:

When a customer attempted to install Agenda 2.0, the following message was displayed:

"Agenda install cannot continue. The disk is bad, contact replacement."

SOLUTION:

When the DOS CHKDSK command was run on the machine, allocation errors were discovered; a CHKDSK /F was run to correct the errors. The Install program then executed without error.

TITLE: Executing a Macro Repeatedly with ALT-Z DATE: 15-Feb-1991

PROBLEM:

In the process of debugging a macro, a customer pressed ALT-Z repeatedly to re-execute the macro. However, Agenda did not recognize changes made to the macro since the macro was first executed. When the macro was edited all changes had been recorded, yet the macro continued to execute as if it had not been modified.

SOLUTION:

Agenda compiles macros before running them, then stores the compiled code in memory. The accelerator key ALT-Z re-executes the last compiled macro. This method is faster than rereading the same macro instructions each time the macro is run, but it does not update the compiled macro in memory.

To force Agenda to recompile the macro, execute the macro from the macro manager. To execute the macro from the macro manager, press ALT-[F3].

TITLE: Running DB2STF from the APPS Directory DATE: 15-Feb-1991

PROBLEM:

Agenda 2.0 stores user files in a default directory called APPS, which is a subdirectory of the Agenda program directory. When recovering a damaged database is it possible to run DB2STF, which resides in the program directory, from the APPS directory?

SOLUTION:

There are two ways to run DB2STF from the C:\AGENDA\APPS directory. If the Agenda program directory is included in the DOS path, DB2STF can be run from any directory. This method may be used if DB2STF or TXT2STF is executed frequently, or is executed on files in several directories.

Alternatively, enter the following command to execute DB2STF from the APPS directory:

..\DB2STF FILENAME

The two periods followed by a backslash indicate to DOS that the command which follows resides in the parent directory of the current directory. This technique also precludes the need to type long paths before either commands or file names.

TITLE: Special Markers in Items for Print Attributes DATE: 15-Feb-1991

PROBLEM:

In Agenda 2.0, a customer inserted a special marker in an item and entered the following printer control code for bold print on an HP LaserJet II:

\027(s3B

The printout was missing a character directly after the marker, and none of the text was printed in bold.

SOLUTION:

In Agenda 2.0, special markers are used to customize printing information. Special markers can be inserted in item, note, header and footer text to change the text attributes. To insert a special marker in an item and enter a setup string, follow the steps below.

  1. Press: [F2] EDIT.
  2. Use the directional keys to move to the area where the marker will be inserted.
  3. Select: [F6] MARKER to bring up the Marker box.
  4. Move to the Special setting.
  5. Press: [F3] CHOICES and select Printer Code. Agenda will display a Sequence setting.
  6. Enter the printer control code at the Sequence setting.

An Agenda 2.0 setup string must be entered in decimal format, and each segment of the code must be separated by a backslash. Using the example above, the decimal equivalent for \027(s3B is:

\027\040\115\051\066

All text following the marker will be printed in bold. To turn the bold type off, another marker must be added containing a reset setup string. To reset the text, follow these steps:

  1. Follow steps 1-5 above.

The setup string to reset the text is \027(s0B; the decimal equivalent of this string is:

\027\040\115\048\066

Enter the above string at the Sequence setting to reset the text.

For more information on special markers, refer to the Agenda 2.0 User's Guide, pages 14-21 - 14-27.

TITLE: Creating an ASCII File from Agenda DATE: 01-Mar-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer wishes to create an ASCII file free of all control characters from an Agenda database. When [F10] Print File is selected, a PRT file is created which contains a series of CTRL-G's (beeps).

SOLUTION:

The CTRL-G code that is printed is actually the item marker. The item marker can be defined as a space, so that the control code will not be printed. Follow these steps to change the item marker:

In Agenda 2.0:

  1. Select: [F10] Utilities Customize.
  2. Move to the Item tag character setting.
  3. Press: [F3] CHOICES. Highlight the space option and press RETURN.
  4. Press: RETURN to confirm the settings.

In Agenda 1.0 / 1.01:

  1. Select: [F10] Utility Preferences Environment.
  2. Move to the Item tag character setting.
  3. Press: the GREY PLUS key. Highlight the space option and press RETURN.
  4. Press: [F9] ACCEPT.

To create the ASCII file in Agenda 2.0:

  1. Select: [F10] Print Final.
  2. Move to the Print to setting.
  3. Press: [F3] CHOICES and select Text file (without printer codes).
  4. Press: RETURN to create the file.

To create the ASCII file in Agenda 1.0 /1.01:

  1. Select: [F10] Print.
  2. Move to the Print to setting.
  3. Press: the GREY PLUS key and select File.
  4. Move to the Format setting.
  5. Press: the GREY PLUS key and select text only.
  6. Move to the Special characters setting.
  7. Press: the GREY PLUS key and select Print as space.
  8. Press: [F9] ACCEPT.

The ASCII file will have the current file name with a PRT extension (e.g., PLANNER.PRT). The ASCII file can then be imported into any text editor.

TITLE: Certain ALT Key Combinations Do Not Work Under Windows DATE: 01-Mar-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer running Agenda 2.0 under Microsoft Windows 3.0 reported that certain Agenda ALT key combinations do not work, (e.g., ALT-C, for the pop-up calendar).

SOLUTION:

ALT-A through ALT-Z are reserved key sequences in Agenda 2.0. Verify that there are no keys assigned as application shortcut keys in the Agenda PIF file.

Application shortcut keys allow Windows users to switch between applications directly, without going through the Windows Program Manager. To remove any assigned shortcut keys, follow these steps:

  1. Click on Accessories and click on the PIF Editor.
  2. Click on File Open and enter the path to the AGENDA.PIF file.
  3. Click on Advanced and move to the Other Options setting.
  4. Click on the Application Shortcut Key box to make it active.
  5. Press: CTRL-BACKSPACE to erase the contents of the box and press RETURN.
  6. Save the modified PIF file.

TITLE: Quotations and Semicolons in Largebox Macro Commands DATE: 01-Mar-1991

PROBLEM:

In Agenda 2.0, how can quotations (") and semicolons (;) be used in a Largebox macro command?

SOLUTION:

To include quotations (") and semicolons (;) in a Largebox macro command, the entire line of macro text must be enclosed in single quotes ('). For example:

{LargeBox;;'This is the "first" sentence of many;'}

TITLE: Agenda Recognizes Too Many Date Input Types DATE: 01-Mar-1991

PROBLEM:

A date entered in Agenda 2.0 that contains a slash (/) or a hyphen (-) separator is interpreted as a date, even though the date input format specified is a period (.).

SOLUTION:

Agenda 2.0 will recognize the slash and the hyphen separator, regardless of the date input format specified in the [F10] File Properties Global Date Settings Input Format setting.

This has been reported to Lotus Development Quality Assurance.

TITLE: Multiple User Access to Agenda Databases DATE: 05-Apr-1991

PROBLEM:

When multiple users access the same Agenda database on a network, the first user obtains full Read / Write access to the database and the file reservation; subsequent users who retrieve the database obtain Read-Only access. If the first user enters a new item in the database, at what point will the Read-Only users be able to see the new item in a view?

SOLUTION:

When Agenda retrieves a database for a Read-Only user, it makes a new, complete copy of the database for that user. This ensures that the database is available if the user with Write access and the file reservation closes the database. Since all users are working with temporary copies of the database, the user with Write access who enters the item must save the database, and the Read-Only users must re-retrieve the file in order for the new item to appear in a view.

TITLE: Hiding Items in an Agenda Database From Other Users DATE: 05-Apr-1991

PROBLEM:

A user will permit others to view an Agenda database, but would like to prevent them from viewing items assigned to a particular category in the database. How can this be achieved?

SOLUTION:

To do this the Agenda database must be protected. To protect the database, follow these steps:

  1. Select: [F10] File Properties.
  2. Move to the Global protection setting and press the SPACEBAR.
  3. At the Default view protection prompt, select Full protection.
  4. At the User can add new views prompt, select No.
  5. Move to the Seal the file prompt and press the SPACEBAR.
  6. Enter a password to seal the file.

Filters must also be placed on all views, so that items assigned to the particular category are not displayed. To filter the views, follow these steps:

  1. Select: [F10] View Properties
  2. Move to the Filter setting and press [F3] CHOICES.
  3. Move to the category for which items should not be displayed.
  4. Press the SPACEBAR twice; Agenda will display a negative sign next to the category.
  5. Press RETURN twice to confirm the settings.

Although the database is now sealed and protected, a Show view can still be created ([F10] Utilities Show Every) which will display all items in the database despite the global protection settings. To prevent this from occurring, an autoexecuting macro could be written to trap menu calls to this area.

Another possibility is to export all of the items assigned to the category before allowing other users to access the database, and importing the items when the users no longer have access to the database.

TITLE: Error: 2012 on Packard Bell 286 Portable DATE: 05-Apr-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer is running Agenda 2.0 on a Packard Bell 286 Portable that has a 20 Meg hard drive and 1 Meg of RAM; the machine has DOS 3.31 installed. Whenever the customer attempts to use any of the sample databases included in Agenda 2.0, the files become damaged after approximately an hour of use. Agenda displays the message "Internal Error - 2012", and the machine is locked up. The machine must be turned off and on at the power switch to return to a DOS prompt.

SOLUTION:

The Packard Bell Portable 286 System Software Setup program contains settings for Hard-Disk Power Down and LCD Powerdown. The default state of the Packard Bell Portable 286 was configured for a Hard-Disk Power Down if more than one minute passed with no disk activity. The LCD screen was configured to turn off if the screen had not been redrawn in three minutes.

The System Software Setup program was re-executed, and the Hard-Disk Powerdown and LCD Powerdown options were turned off. The customer was then able to use any of the Agenda databases without the Error 2012 occurring. The steps for executing the System Software Setup program are outlined below.

Steps to Enter the Setup Program:

  1. At the DOS prompt, press the CTRL-ALT-ESC keys simultaneously. The following message will be displayed:

You are now in the Award Software CMOS Setup Program:

2. Use the DOWN arrow key to move to the Hard-Disk Power Down setting and

specify OFF.
3. Use the DOWN arrow key to move to the LCD Power Down setting and

specify OFF.
4. Select: [F10] to save the changes. The machine will reboot.

Customers with further questions on the Packard Bell Portable 286 System Software Setup program should contact Packard Bell at:

TITLE: Error: Overlays are Empty or Corrupt DATE: 12-Apr-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer installed Agenda 2.0 and successfully ran the product. After exiting from Agenda and loading another software product, the customer again attempted to load Agenda. The message "Error: Overlays are empty or corrupt" was displayed. The customer reinstalled Agenda and was able to load it without error. However, as soon as another program was executed, and the customer attempted to load Agenda again, the error message was displayed.

SOLUTION:

The computer was infected by a variety of the Jerusalem virus. This was evidenced by an increase in the size of the AGENDA.EXE file from 6881 to 8704 bytes when Agenda was started.

TITLE: Error: "Can't Open AG.TMP" on a Network DATE: 12-Apr-1991

PROBLEM:

When a customer attempts to start Agenda from a network drive, the error message "Can't Open AG.TMP" is displayed.

SOLUTION:

The network administrator had specified Read-Only rights for the Agenda program directory. When the customer attempted to start Agenda, the temporary files that Agenda creates could not be written. There are two possible solutions:

  1. Set the Agenda program directory rights to Read / Write.
  2. Use the DOS SET command to specify a temporary directory for Agenda. For example, to specify an Agenda directory on drive X as the destination for the temporary files, the following command would be used:

SET AG_TMP=X:\AGENDA

This command can be placed in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

TITLE: Pasting Contents of Metro Clipboard into Agenda DATE: 12-Apr-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer followed the instructions on using the Metro Clipboard accessory in the Agenda User's Guide, Appendix C, pages 9-12. With Metro memory resident, the customer pressed ALT-SHIFT-ENTER in order to paste text into Agenda that had been copied to the Metro Clipboard. However, the contents of the Metro Clipboard were not pasted into Agenda.

SOLUTION:

The customer was using a memory resident program called Software Carousel. Software Carousel, manufactured by Softlogic Solutions, allows customers to multi-task. When the Software Carousel program was disabled, it was possible to paste data from the Metro Clipboard into Agenda.

For more information on Software Carousel, customers may contact:

TITLE: (80 X 43) or (80 X 50) Display in Agenda Under Windows DATE: 26-Apr-1991

PROBLEM:

When a customer launches Agenda from Lotus Magellan or from Desqview, Agenda can use an (80 X 43) or (80 X 50) display. However, when Agenda is loaded under Windows 3.0, an (80 X 25) display is used. Is it possible to obtain an (80 X 43) or (80 X 50) display when running Agenda under Windows 3.0?

SOLUTION:

To obtain an (80 X 43) or (80 X 50) display when running Agenda under Windows 3.0, the Windows SYSTEM.INI file must be modified. The file can be modified in Windows, or in any text editor. To modify the file in Windows, follow these steps:

  1. In the Windows Program Manager, click on File Run.
  2. Enter: Notepad and press RETURN.
  3. In Notepad, click on File Open.
  4. Enter the path to the file (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI) and press RETURN.
  5. Move to the end of the file (the line should read [NonWindowsApp]).
  6. Press RETURN to move to a new line.
  7. Enter: ScreenLines=43 for a machine with an EGA card. Enter: ScreenLines=50 for a machine with a VGA card.
  8. Click on File Save.

For the changes to take effect, the customer must then exit Windows, re-load Windows and start Agenda.

TITLE: [F5] FIND "End" Finds Strange Agenda Help Screen DATE: 17-May-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer pressed [F1] HELP to invoke the Agenda 2.0 Help utility. The customer then selected [F5] FIND to search for the word "End". Agenda displayed a list of Help screens that contain the word "End". The second screen in the list was called:

Agendatown The Cast

When the customer selected this screen a list of unfamiliar names was displayed.

SOLUTION:

This has been reported to Lotus Development Quality Assurance. The Help screen that the Customer inadvertently found is a listing of the Lotus Agenda developers and the marketing staff. The names are not associated with any database files the customer may create; they can be ignored.

TITLE: Error: "Empty or Damaged Overlay File" Loading Agenda DATE: 17-May-1991

PROBLEM:

When a customer attempted to start Agenda, the error message "Empty or Damaged Overlay File" was displayed. Prior to receiving the error, the customer had received and installed the Agenda 2.0 Update Kit. The computer was a Prima 386/16 Mhz, with a 40 Meg hard drive and 2 Megs of memory; the version of DOS was DR-DOS 5.0

In an attempt to eliminate the error message, the customer reinstalled both Agenda 2.0 and the Update Kit. However, the original Agenda files were never deleted; the customer re-installed to the same directory, overwriting the existing files.

SOLUTION:

The CHKDSK *.* command was used to check the integrity of the Agenda files; it revealed that the A.EXE file had significant non-contiguous sectors and was damaged. The customer ran a CHKDSK/F to address the errors, and reinstalled Agenda to a new directory; the program then loaded without error.

TITLE: Using AG_CHK on Planner Database Indicates Damage in File DATE: 24-May-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer used the Checker utility, which is part of the Agenda 2.0 Update B Kit, to check the original Planner database included in Agenda 2.0. The utility indicated that the database was damaged.

SOLUTION:

The original Planner database file did have some minor damage. To correct the problem, run the Checker utility with the /f parameter. The /f parameter allows the Checker utility to repair some common forms of minor damage. To use the /f parameter on the original Planner database, enter the following command:

AG_CHK C:\AGENDA\APPS\PLANNER.AG /f

Where C:\AGENDA\APPS\PLANNER.AG represents the path to the Planner file.

NOTE: The /f parameter must be entered in lower case.

TITLE: The Checker Utility Program AG_CHK DATE: 24-May-1991

PROBLEM:

What is the Checker utility that is included with the Agenda 2.0 Update B Kit? What steps are necessary to run the Checker utility?

SOLUTION:

The Checker utility allows customers to verify the integrity of Agenda databases. To run the Checker utility, follow these steps:

  1. Make the Agenda directory the current directory. For example, enter the command CD\AGENDA and press RETURN.
  2. Enter: AG_CHK followed by the name of the database to be checked. For example, to check a file named DATABASE.AG in the AGENDA\APPS directory on drive C, enter the following command:

AG_CHK C:\AGENDA\APPS\DATABASE.AG

To check more than one file at a time, list each file name after AG_CHK, and separate each filename with a space.

Multiple files can also be checked using the DOS wildcard character characters asterisk (*) and question mark (?). For example, to check all the files starting with the word NEW in the AGENDA\APPS directory on drive C, enter the following command:

AG_CHK C:\AGENDA\APPS\NEW*.AG

To check all the files in a directory, enter the directory name after the AG_CHK command. For example, to check all the files in the C:\SALES directory, enter the following command:

AG_CHK C:\SALES

To fix some common types of minor damage, use the /f parameter with the Checker utility. For example, to make the Checker fix and then check the file called DATABASE.AG, enter the following command:

AG_CHK C:\AGENDA\APPS\DATABASE.AG /f

NOTE: The /f parameter must be entered in lower case.

SYNONYM: Damaged; corrupted.

TITLE: Issues Addressed in the Agenda 2.0 Update B Kit DATE: 24-May-1991

PROBLEM:

What problems were resolved in the Agenda 2.0 Update B Kit?

SOLUTION:

The following problems were resolved in the Agenda 2.0 Update B Kit:

  1. When a category based sort was removed from a view, the links that allowed the sort would remain; this resulted in damage to the file.
  2. When Agenda needed to make changes to item and category pointers, and a low memory situation existed, file damage could result.
  3. [F10] File Maintenance Compress would corrupt the file due to compiled filters (views with more than one category filter), or due to some low memory conditions.
  4. Corruption could occur in notes for recurring items, after the item was marked [F4] DONE.
  5. If ALT-[F8] GETITMS was pressed in a note for an item, and section sorting was active in the view, random characters were produced in the note.
  6. A date category with an action set to itself would create multiple links that would point nowhere; this resulted in an abnormally large file.
  7. When a date category with an action was deleted, the date category would become corrupted; this usually resulted in the date matching capabilities being deactivated.
  8. When the view settings were changed in a datebook view, or another view was selected, the Totals column would disappear.

TITLE: Storing Agenda Program Files on a RAM Disk and Hard Drive DATE: 31-May-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer copied the following Agenda 2.0 program files to a RAM disk: AGENDA.RI, AGENDA.EXE, A.EXE, and AGENDA.VAL. The customer was unable to access the Help file (AGENDA.HLP), which was located on the hard drive. The RAM disk did not have enough free space for the AGENDA.HLP file; however, the customer wanted to be able to access the file. Listing both directories in the Path statement did not resolve the problem.

SOLUTION:

The DOS Path command indicates the directories to be searched for EXE, COM, or BAT files. In the situation described above, since the Help file (AGENDA.HLP) is not a command or batch file, the Path statement did not allow Agenda to access the file.

The DOS APPEND command was used and Agenda was able to access the AGENDA.HLP file on the hard drive. The APPEND command sets a search path for data files and, optionally, executable files. The correct syntax for the APPEND command follows:

APPEND [d:]path[;[d:]path...]

For more information regarding the DOS APPEND command, refer to a DOS manual.

TITLE: Starting Agenda Using the File A.EXE DATE: 31-May-1991

PROBLEM:

When the command A is entered, Agenda accesses the file A.EXE to load. Are there limitations when Agenda is started with this file?

SOLUTION:

When Agenda is started using the A.EXE file, only the core of the program is loaded into memory. The following print features: Print Final, Print Preview, Print Setup, and the System command, which temporarily suspends an Agenda session to access the operating system, are not available options. To access any of these features, enter the command Agenda to load the entire program.

TITLE: Agenda Overwrites FAT on Floppy If /System is Selected DATE: 31-May-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer saved an Agenda 2.0 file to a subdirectory on a disk in the floppy drive (for example, A:\AGENDA\DBASE.AG). After the file was saved, the customer replaced the disk in drive A with a second disk which also contained subdirectories with files.

With the second disk in drive A, the customer selected / System to temporarily suspend the Agenda session. Drive A was accessed; it appeared that Agenda was writing to the disk. When the DOS DIR command was used, to view a directory of the disk in drive A, the files on the second disk had been overwritten with the same directories and files contained on the original disk.

SOLUTION:

The problem has been reported to Lotus Development Quality Assurance. Agenda 2.0 saves the file when any of the / Print menu options are selected; it also saves the file in memory when / System is selected. To write a file to a floppy disk, select [F10] File Maintenance Makecopy, rather than / File Save.

Agenda reads only part of a database file into memory, unlike 123 or Symphony which read the entire file into memory; therefore, replacing the disk in drive A while in an active Agenda session is unwise. This removes the source of the file for Agenda.

In the situation described above, Agenda overwrote the file allocation table (FAT) on the second disk with the data from the original disk. Agenda was unaware that the disk in drive A was not the original disk.

NOTE: The problem occurs when the disk in the floppy drive contains only subdirectories with files, (that is, when there are no files in the disk's root directory).

TITLE: Deleting a Password Set on an Agenda Database File DATE: 31-May-1991

PROBLEM:

A customer wishes to delete a password previously set on an Agenda 2.0 database file. The customer knows the password, and wishes to remove the password from the file. How can this be accomplished?

SOLUTION:

To delete the password from an Agenda file, retrieve the file and follow these steps:

  1. Select: [F10] File Properties.
  2. Move to the Set file password setting and press SPACEBAR.
  3. Agenda will prompt for the password. Enter the current password and press RETURN.
  4. Agenda will prompt for a new password. Press RETURN without entering a new password.
  5. Agenda will prompt for the new password to be entered again, for verification. Press RETURN again.
  6. Press: RETURN to confirm the settings.

The password has been removed from the Agenda file.

TITLE: Date, Numeric, and Unindexed Category Values Not Exported DATE: 31-May-1991

PROBLEM:

When a customer selected [F10] File Transfer Export in Agenda 2.0, to create a structured (STF) file, the values for date, numeric, and unindexed categories were not transferred to the structured file. The database was originally created in Agenda 1.0 or 1.01, and was converted to an Agenda 2.0 file through [F10] File Retrieve.

SOLUTION:

The categories which were not exported when the STF file was created originally existed as exclusive categories in Agenda 1.0 or 1.01. The customer modified the category type in the Agenda 2.0 Category Properties Box to convert the categories to date, numeric, and unindexed categories.

The only known workaround is to reopen the file in Agenda 1.0 or 1.01 and specify the categories as non-exclusive. To do this, select [F10] Exclusive in the Category Manager. The file can then be retrieved in Agenda 2.0, and the STF file will be created without error. The problem has been reported to Lotus Development Quality Assurance.

TITLE: Incorrect Spacing Between Columns When a View is Printed DATE: 31-May-1991

PROBLEM:

To print an Agenda 2.0 view in landscape mode on an HP DeskJet, a customer:

  1. Installed the HP 22707K Landscape Upgrade Cartridge.
  2. Selected the HP DeskJet Plus driver in Agenda, so that the landscape option was available in Agenda's Print Setup.

Agenda printed the view in landscape orientation; however, a one inch gap appeared between the sections and the first category column to the right.

SOLUTION:

According to the HP cartridge documentation "Using the HP 22707K Landscape Upgrade Cartridge and the HP 22707L Landscape Fonts Cartridge", the HP 22707K Landscape Upgrade Cartridge updates the DeskJet printer, enabling it to print Courier 16.67 pitch text in landscape orientation.

The font selected in Agenda was a 10 pitch font, which the printer could not access in landscape mode unless the HP 22707L Landscape cartridge was also installed. The cartridge documentation states that the HP22707L Landscape Fonts Cartridge includes options for Courier 10 and 20 pitch.

In the situation described above, Agenda adjusted the layout of the view to accommodate a 10 pitch font; however, since the printer was capable of printing only a 16.67 pitch font, a gap in the printout resulted.

To resolve the problem, either install the HP 22707L Landscape Fonts Cartridge in conjunction with the HP 22707K Cartridge; or, select a 16.67 pitch font as the Number 1 font in Agenda's Print Setup.
