The winner with 3 votes was Whiplash, by the late Ed Atkinson. Liam Stephens (Ireland) voted for it. It is the subject of a crediting dilemma. Ed included Whiplash in the collection of his original, unpublished problems that he provided in 2012 to help keep the contests going. But Whiplash was not published until this contest, 12 years later. In the meantime, the late Roy Little published a different setting that featured the same deferred stroke. He called it Back Step. It appeared in Roy’s Country Store column, October 2019 issue of ACF Bulletin. The usual rule is to credit the composer who publishes first, which would disqualify Whiplash. However, under these circumstances, it seems only right to allow Whiplash to have its belated day on the stage.
Runner-up with 2 votes was Triple Threat, by Roy Little. Gary Ellison and Don Myles voted for it. Last was Bill Salot’s Caged Kings with 1 vote, thanks to Lloyd Gordon (Canada).
The contest had 168 visitors, and 6 of them voted. Don’t be bashful. The International Voters’ Ladder for 2024 has just started with Contest 72. Can Liam Stephens hold his one-win lead for the 5 remaining contests this year?
This trio of deferred strokes differ in size and ending. They share the commonality of quadruple jumps that land on different squares. That should be all the hints that solvers need to be successful.
You are invited to view them all animated at this web site. The most popular entry will be decided by the votes of website visitors like you. Your vote will also let you see immediately how others are voting. More voters are needed to keep these contests going.
If you choose to e-mail Bill Salot at wjsalot@comcast.net, disclosing how you voted, you will be put on the International Voters Ladder to determine who the best winner-picker is. Voters on the upper rungs of the ladder are published with the results of each contest. At the end of the year, we will identify the Voter-of-the-Year.
If you want to contribute your own original, unpublished, checker problem for use in a future contest, please send it to the above e-mail address. More composers are needed to keep these contests going.
