The last of the giant stroke contests produced a first-time world champion. Fate, by Lloyd Gordon (Canada), hid a fine 2x2 ending behind an ingenious sextuple jump to win with 3 votes. George Hay, Bob Newell, and Liam Stephens (Ireland) voted for it. Marathon, by Bill Salot, featured a combination stroke into a laborious 3x3 struggle. Gary Ellison cast the only vote for it. Such problems with blended themes require a lot of work, but surprise moves in concise solutions are usually more popular. 205 visited the contest site, and 4 of them voted. George Hay has now picked the winner in 4 consecutive contests. The final contest is coming up. Don’t miss it.
Concluding this series of 3 giant stroke contests, presented here is a rare pair of baffling problems. Each blends a difficult stroke with a difficult ending in tandem. Unless you are a glutton for punishment, it is suggested that you not spend too much fruitless time frustrating yourself with futile efforts at solving them on your own.
If you do manage to solve the strokes, you are still not halfway home. The endgames may prove to be the greater stumbling blocks. To sidestep those difficult tasks, consider just enjoying their animations and absorbing the brief notes along the way. If you end up appreciating these two efforts, please vote for the one that impresses you most. It will be welcome feedback.
The most popular entry will be decided by the votes of visitors to this website like you. Your vote will also let you see immediately how others are voting. If you choose to e-mail Bill Salot at wjsalot@comcast.net, disclosing how you voted, you will be added to the International Voters’ Ladder to determine who the best winner-picker is. Voters on the upper rungs of the ladder will be published with the results of the contest.
Contest 77 in December 2024 will conclude 13 years of these contests. It will probably be the last.
