The ACF Website wishes a big congratulations to John Acker, the composer of D-Day, which was voted the winner of Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest #7.
ROOKIES GAME PROBLEM TROUNCES VETERAN PROBLEMISTS
30-year-old John Acker bested accomplished problemists more than twice his age, & now is the Unofficial World Champion Checker Problem Composer. His 15-star masterpiece, D-Day, was one of the best problems of the year, winning Contest #7 going away, with its 7 electronic & 3 postal votes more than doubling the combined votes for all others.
Go back to D-Day and marvel as the piece on 31 precisely threads its way through enemy lines from back row to king row, setting traps, dodging threats, returning to overcome a pitch, steal, and breeches, culminating in a famous 2x2 endgame win. Amazing!
Fanny Kay Stumble, by Jim Loy, tied for 2nd, 1 electronic & 1 postal vote; it was an unpublished correction of Drummond, 1861, on the Single Corner, 10-15 line, dubbed the Fanny Kay opening by Drummond.
Offshoot, by Bill Salot, tied for 2nd, 2 electronic votes; it was based on Magic Moments, Note D, colors reversed. Magic Moments, by Ed Atkinson, got 0 votes, as he predicted.
AFTER THE CONTEST, JIM LOY POINTED OUT A DUAL SOLUTION TO MAGIC MOMENTS, THUS DISQUALIFYING IT. AT THE 7TH MOVE OF THE TRUNK,20 16, WHITE ALSO WINS WITH 19 16, JIM LOY. CONTINUE: 19 16, 12-19, 23 16, 8-12 (5-9, *16 12, WW), *16 11, 12-16, *11 8, WW
HE ALSO POINTED OUT TWO REMARKABLE DUAL SOLUTIONS TO OFFSHOOT, THUS DISQUALIFYING IT TOO. ALL OF ITS RED MOVES SHOULD HAVE ASTERISKS, TWO OF THE WHITE MOVES SHOULD NOT. THE TWO QUESTIONABLE WHITE MOVES WERE 25 22AT THE THIRD MOVE, WHERE 20 16, *15-18, THEN 16 11 AND 24 20 ARE DUAL DRAWS AND 20 16 AT THE SEVENTH MOVE, WHERE 21 17, 18-27, *19 15, IS ANOTHER DUAL DRAW.
AFTER THE CONTEST, JIM LOY POINTED OUT THAT MAGIC MOMENTS HAS A DUAL SOLUTION, THUS DISQUALIFYING IT. INSTEAD OF 20 16 AT THE 7TH MOVE OF THE TRUNK, 19 16 ALSO WINS, JIM lOY. CONTINUE: 19 16, 12-19, 23 16, 8-12 (5-9, *16 12, WW), *16 11, 12-16, *11 8, WW
After the contest, Jim Loy pointed out two dual solutions to Offshoot, thus disqualifying it. Instead of 25 22 at the third move, 20 16, *15-18, then 16 11 and 24 20 are dual draws. Instead of 20 16 at the seventh move, 21 17, 18-27, *19 15, is another dual draw.
