The ACF Website wishes a big congratulations to Ed Atkinson, Harrisburg, PA, the composer of Transformation, which was voted the winner of Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest #9.
CONTEST #9 - SLOCUM STROKES - RESULTS: Gary Ellison said all were good. Joe Moore said Transformation, by Ed Atkinson, was a masterpiece. It won convincingly with twice as many votes as the other four entries combined. Short and Sweet, by V. J. Parrot, was a distant second. Home Run, by Roy Little, was third. Cornered, by Melvyn Green, and Do U C What I C, by Bill Salot, trailed.
CONTEST #9 was the first to consist entirely of DEFERRED STROKES, probably the most popular checker problem style of all time; a style made famous by G. H. Slocum (1859-1914), who published 53 such problems. Contest #9 was vetted more thoroughly than the first 8 contests, thus practically assuring a good start to the new Contest year.
White was a piece up in 4 of the 5 settings, but in every case needed key preliminary moves before triggering the winning strokes. Enjoy the play in animation, noting the important variations.
