Results of Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest #22

Most 2-move problems are for beginners. These were notable exceptions.

"Never Give Up", by Bill Salot, sneakily gave the opposition a choice of quickly losing by any of 5 different 2-for-1's. It earned 8 votes and 1st place.

Tied for 2nd place with 3 votes each were "A Bit Strange" by Roy Little and "Wee Surprise" by Jim Loy. Roy and Jim were defending co-champions from Contest #21. "A Bit Strange" required a delicately timed retreat and pitch into an early 1st Position. "Wee Surprise" featured a pitch and grip, forcing one of 3 different shots. It corrected the following D. Eades versus M. Mancini game: 11-15 24-20 15-18 23x14 9x18 22x15 10x19 25-22 8-11 21-17 5-9 22-18 9-14 18x9 6x22 26x17 3-8 17-13 1-6 27-24 7-10 24x15 10x19 29-25 6-9 13x6 2x9 25-22 9-14 forming "Wee Surprise".

Trailing with no votes was Ed Atkinson's "Frozen Crystal", a contest fill-in, which sacrificed one piece to offer 8 frustrating options all of which returned 2 or more pieces.

The contest had 360 visitors, 14 of which voted. The 14 voters and 4 composers returned to monitor the voting 374 times.

Here is how this contest was first introduced:

Can "Simple but Deceptive" describe a checker problem, or is it an oxymoron? Do these four gems satisfy the description? They may not be masterpieces, but they are original, unpublished, unusual and nearly equal in style, length and difficulty.
