Results of World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest 23
This "Deferred 2-Way Stroke" collection broke a record with 422 contest visitors. One out of every 21 of them voted. The contest elicited comments, such as "excellent" and "best yet".
"Delusion", by Roy Little garnered 10 votes, matching votes for the other 5 competitors combined. Its unique mirrored setups for 2 stunning strokes gave Roy his 2nd overwhelming win of 2015.
In 2nd place with 6 votes was aptly named "Tilt-A-Whirl", by Ed Atkinson. Its brilliantly juxtaposed, deferred quadruple jumps could have won almost any contest except this one.
The other 4 entries beautifully demonstrated the deferred 2-way stroke theme, but suffered by comparison with the top duo.
"Trigonometry", by Bill Salot, was 3rd with 2 votes.
"High Blood Pressure", by Roy Little, and "CW/CCW", by Bill Salot, tied for 4th with 1 vote each.
"Either Way", by Ed Atkinson, undeservedly trailed with 0 votes.
This is the way Contest 23 was originally introduced:
Deferred Two-Way Strokes
Three of the world's most prolific living problemists have challenged each other here to a special contest. Each composer entered two original, unpublished problems, all of the same type. This problem type is among the rarest, most difficult-to-compose of all, a true test of patience and ability.
In a Deferred Stroke, one or more of the moves prior to the stroke must not be a pitch or sacrifice. Then to make it a Two-Way Deferred Stroke, one of those early moves must force the opponent to choose between two moves (not jumps), either of which succumbs to a different stroke.
Each problem therefore features two strokes, both of which should enter into the problem evaluation, although only one is animated at this web site. Check the notes marked "2nd Way" to see the strokes that are not animated.
Each composer hopes you are impressed enough to vote for the best of his two entries. Your votes are prizes worth more than money.
Please enter your original, unpublished, dual-free problems in future contests by sending them at anytime to: Bill Salot
